Product Name : Carabiner

Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye): Snap Hook Body with Round Rope Eye

The round-eye forged aluminum carabiner is the body forging of a snap hook. One end has a round eye for threading rope or attaching a ring; the other end is an open hook used with a gate. Recesses along the body reduce weight, and a small stud near the eye locates the gate.

In use, the body carries tension along its major axis, with the curved section of the hook as the main load path. Al Forge Tech (AFT) hot forges the body so grain flow follows the C-shaped contour continuously and the lightening recesses are pressed in during forging. After heat treatment, AFT machines the gate pin holes and applies vibratory finishing and dyed anodizing before delivery to the brand for assembly.

Key Features

  • C-shaped body hot forged with continuous grain flow through the curve
  • Lightening recesses forged in for low weight with rigidity
  • Round eye suits rope or ring attachment
  • Gate hole machining, vibratory finishing and dyed anodizing

Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) Manufacturing Process

  1. Drawing review and DFM: we confirm alloy, load direction and critical dimensions, then run QForm simulation to predict metal flow and defect risk.
  2. Die design and manufacturing: the number of die sets (for example, blocker and finisher dies) is planned around part complexity, and die contours are checked with a portable 3D scanner.
  3. Hot forging: closed-die forming on 600T–8,000T hot forging presses creates a continuous grain flow that follows the part contour.
  4. Heat treatment: T4 solution treatment and T6 artificial aging are performed in-house, with parameters set by alloy and strength requirement.
  5. CNC machining and finishing: holes, threads and mating surfaces are machined, followed by deburring, vibratory finishing, shot blasting or anodizing as required.
  6. Inspection and shipment: dimensions, hardness and chemical composition are verified with CMM, hardness testers and a spectrometer, with lot traceability kept under IATF 16949.

FAQ

What determines the strength of a carabiner body?

Mainly the alloy and temper, the cross-section design of the body (for example recess depth and the section of the curved portion), and whether forged grain flow is intact. AFT forges the body so grain flow follows its contour and sets T6 heat treatment conditions for the alloy. Rated strength and certification are validated by the brand against its design and test standards, and AFT can supply tensile test and material data.

How do I choose between the round-eye and square-eye carabiner?

The round eye suits rope or round rings, allowing rope to rotate naturally in the eye under load. The rectangular eye of the square-eye version suits flat webbing, keeping it flat under load and preventing it from twisting or bunching. The choice depends on the rope or webbing used, and AFT can produce either style to the brand's drawing.

How does a forged aluminum Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) compare with casting or machining from billet?

Forging shapes aluminum in the solid state under pressure, so the grain flow follows the part contour and the porosity and shrinkage common in castings are avoided. Compared with machining from solid billet, a near-net-shape forging removes less material and shortens machining time. For a Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) under repeated loads, forging balances strength and weight; the final choice still depends on design loads and volume.

Can you assess forging feasibility while the Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) is still in design?

Yes. Al Forge Tech works mainly as an OEM supplier, and our engineers can give design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback at the concept or drawing stage, such as adjusting thin ribs, abrupt section changes or draft angles to avoid laps and underfill. QForm simulation predicts metal flow early, and the results are cross-checked against our die design experience.

Can the Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) be anodized or given other surface finishes?

Yes. Al Forge Tech offers anodizing (including hard anodizing), shot blasting, vibratory finishing, e-coating and painting, plus pickling and ultrasonic washing lines to clean parts after machining. Please note the finish type and film thickness on the drawing so machining allowances and cosmetic standards for the Forged Aluminum Carabiner (Round Eye) can be evaluated together.
